Help preserve funding for mental health services

According to the Michigan Mental Health code and the State Community Mental Health Services Program Contract, Saginaw County Community Mental Health Authority is required to provide the mental health “safety net” for people who are underinsured or uninsured.

Cuts being proposed by the Michigan legislature will eliminate that safety net. Our healthcare, law enforcement and educational systems cannot afford to lose that safety net. Our families cannot. Our community cannot.

You can help make sure we keep it.

Share this information with your colleagues, family and friends. And make sure Lansing hears your voice – and theirs.

Contact your legislators

Contact your state senator and representative and let them know you believe that the proposed cuts will have a huge negative impact on your community. You can find key points to include in your letter or e-mail here. You’ll find sample letters here.

Not sure who your senator or representative is? Saginaw County legislators are listed here.

Contact committee members

While it’s important that you weigh in with your senator and representative, it’s even more critical that you contact the legislative leadership working on the MDCH section of the 2010 budget bills. They are listed here. You can find key points to include in your letter or e-mail here. You’ll find sample letters here.

Stand up for your family

Are you, or is a member of your family, a consumer of mental health services? Are you under-insured or uninsured? You will be directly affected, and your story is the most important to tell.

Be sure to tell legislators that you will be directly affected by these cuts.

Mobilize your network

Are you a member of a healthcare, law enforcement, educational or other organization whose members will be affected by these changes? Mobilize the organization. Contact the organization leadership and make sure they understand how their members will be adversely affected by cuts in mental health general fund services.

Have your organization leadership contact the Michigan Association of Community Mental Health Boards or (517) 374-6848 to lend their voices to the statewide organization.
