For many, the advent of a new year means big promises to take big steps to make big changes. New Year's resolutions are a reminder of who we are, what we are and what we are supposed to do with our lives. It is in our nature to improve ourselves.

If you want to realize your New Year's resolution this year, follow these 10 steps:
1. Set yourself goals rather than New Year's resolutions. When you set a goal you are working towards something. You can work backwards from where you want to get to and create an action plan of little steps you need to take to get there. This is a much more realistic way of creating the change you want because you're slowly building yourself up to reach it.
2. Set no more than 3-5 goals. The key is to focus and prioritize. You want to enjoy your year so don't put too much on your plate or you'll get into overwhelm. Then everything everywhere will go pants up.
3. Ask yourself, "What needs to happen this year for this year to be the absolute best year yet?" This will set you on the right path for growth as you'll think about how to make this year better than the last. It will also remind you of what's important to you.
4. "Anything that doesn't help you work towards your goal is a distraction". Live by this rule throughout the year. If in doubt of doing something, ask yourself, "Will this get me closer to my goals?" If the answer is no, think about whether you really want to do this.
5. Start a goal group that you can share monthly updates with. Together you can inspire and encourage each other, and keep each other going on those bumpy patches. There's nothing as motivating as being surrounded by people who believe in you. The monthly updates will also help you to reflect on what's gone well, what you need to work on and how you can do even better next month.
6. Enjoy the journey! The most fun thing about working towards something is the journey itself. That's when you're being challenged, you're growing and you're having the most fun. Make sure you remember that.
