Meet the Instructors

Matt Nagy

Matt has twenty-four years full-time experience in the Human Services field.  He is a graduate of University of Phoenix has a Bachelor of Science in Human Services Management, as well as an Associate Degree in Criminal Justice.  Matt has ten years of experience working directly with adjudicated youth.  He has worked for SCCMHA as a Support Coordinator, Community Liaison and as a Trainer.  Current Certifications include American Heart Association BLS/Heartsaver First Aid/CPR Instructor; and Crisis Prevention Institute Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Instructor.  Matt has been an instructor for Youth Mental Health First Aid for 7 years and has recently become dual certified to teach both Youth and Adult Mental Health First Aid training. 

Valerie Toney

Valerie is a graduate of Michigan State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology.  Valerie worked for ten years as a Support Coordinator for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities prior to her current position as Trainer.  Valerie also worked as a Recipient Rights Officer and as a School-to-Work Transition Specialist through SVRC and in partnership with Saginaw ISD prior to coming to Saginaw County Community Mental Health Authority in 2006 as a Trainer, Crisis Intervention, and Mobile Response Support Services staff.  Valerie is a Certified BLS Instructor through The American Heart Association.  She received her dual instructor certification in both Adult and Youth Mental Health First Aid in 2020.  

Mary Baukus

Mary is the Evidence-Based Practice and Trauma-Informed Care Coordinator at SCCMHA.  Mary has a Master's degree in Social Work and is a Licensed Master's Social Worker.  She received her Master's degree from Michigan State University in 1998.  Mary is also a certified clinical trauma professional through Evergreen Certifications, and she has over 20 years' experience in the mental health field.  Additionally, Mary has been a certified Adult Mental Health First Aid Instructor since 2014 and has been a contributing trainer at SCCMHA on various topics since 2013.

Alecia Schabel, LBSW

Alecia has been in the Social Work field for over 20 years. Her experience ranges from Community Outreach within the Health Department, Case Management and Wraparound Services with Community Mental Health, a Mental Health Specialist with Head Start Preschool and Early Head Start, a MDHHS Great Start to Quality Trainer and is currently the Continuing Education Supervisor for Saginaw County Community Mental Health Authority. Alecia has a Bachelor of Social Work degree, minor in Substance Abuse Treatment, from the University of Michigan and is a licensed Social Worker (LBSW) in the state of Michigan. She also has an associate degree in marketing management. Alecia has been providing professional trainings for over 10 years. She has been dually certified as an Adult and Youth Mental Health First Aid Instructor for over 5 years. Lastly, she is also a certified ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) instructor.

Matthew Clark

Matthew is the Walking with Warriors Veteran and Military Family Navigator at SCCMHA. He is a graduate of the University of Michigan-Flint and holds graduate degrees in Public Administration as well as Social Sciences. Matthew has 10 years of experience in human services, including working with cash assistance recipients, public housing families, and veterans. Matthew is a 5-year veteran of the Michigan Army National Guard. Matthew has been a certified Mental Health First Aid trainer since April 2023.

Sgt. Gary Fitzmaurice

Sgt. Gary Fitzmaurice has over 25 years in Law Enforcement.  In 2013, Sgt. Fitzmaurice facilitated the Swift & Sure Sanctions Probation Program and is the adviser to State of Michigan and Department of Justice on the implementation of SSSPP and Law Enforcement's role.  He has been a certified Public Safety Mental Health First Aid Instructor since 2014.
